Caption: Head louse. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a blood-sucking human head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) clinging to hairs with the claws on the ends of its legs. This insect parasite is 2-3.5 millimetres long and inhabits the hair of the head. Scratching the itchy spots caused by lice bites can lead to skin inflammation (dermatitis) and bacterial skin infections (impetigo). Magnification: x22 at 6x7cm size.
