Caption: Feather louse head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a feather louse (family Ischnocera), there is some feather debris (red) in its mouth. This is an ectoparasite (external parasite) of birds. Some feather lice feed only on debris from the feathers, causing no harm to the bird. But others feed on the bird's blood and can cause disease, or anaemia, which causes weakness.
