The flattened body is oval in shape; the forewings are hardened and it is the hindwings beneath these that are used for flight; on the last segment of the abdomen are a pair of cerci (sensory structures). The legs are spined. Periplaneta americana is a large, nocturnal (night active) insect that can move fast and prefers warmth. Originally from Florida, it has become a widespread household pest in many countries. Their diet is broad and they are known to carry disease. Magnification: x3 at 6x7cm size.
