Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (view from the front). At centre is the head with long antennae and compound eyes. The biting and chewing mouthparts of mandible and tentacle-like palps can be seen. The body is flattened; above the head is the pronotum, an exoskeleton shield that protects organs of the thorax. The spined legs are attached to the thorax and enable Periplaneta americana to move fast. This cockroach is a large, nocturnal (night active) species which prefers warmth. Orig- inally from Florida, it is a widespread household pest in many countries. Cockroaches are disease carriers. Magnification: x8 at 6x7cm size.
