Caption: The praying mantis Mantis religiosa in an intimi- dation posture. This green and yellow coloured mantis relies on its body colour for camouflage among plants on which it lives. When disturbed, as seen here, the mantis raises its front legs to reveal two white spots that mimic eyes. These eyespots would startle an enemy. Mantis religiosa also opens and raises its wings creating a noise which resembles crumpled paper. Raised wings make the insect appear larger, while their noise adds to the intimidation display. Predators of the praying mantis include birds, reptiles and amphibians.
