Caption: Cockroach. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a unidentified species of cockroach (Periplaneta sp.) close to maturity. At centre is the head with long antennae and compound eyes. The body is flattened; above the head is the carapace, an exoskeleton shield that protects organs of the thorax. The spined legs are attached to the thorax and enable cockroaches to move fast. Cockroaches consume mainly vegetable matter, but will tackle almost any type of organic debris including human rubbish. Cockroaches which inhabit human settlements can therefore transmit disease. Magnification unknown.
