Caption: American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) specimen. The head (top) has long antennae and compound eyes. The flattened body is oval in shape with hardened forewings. The hindwings beneath the forewings are used for flight. On the last segment of the abdomen are a pair of cerci (sensory structures, not seen) and its legs are spined. The American cockroach is a large, nocturnal insect that can move fast and prefers warmth. Originally from Florida, it has become a widespread household pest in many countries. Their diet is broad and they are known to transmit diseases.
