Caption: Giant hissing cockroaches (Grompadorhina portentosa) collected in a woven basket by local people at Tsimanampetsotsa national park in Madagascar. This cockraoch is wingless and can measure up to nine centimetres long. It is endemic to the savannah areas of Madagascar and scavenges on forest floors. It creates its distinctive hissing noise by pushing air through spiracles on the abdomen. The noise is produced when the cockroach is alarmed or when it is mating.
