Caption: Light micrograph of a Mayfly nymph on water-weed. The feathery projections along its back are gills. Mayfly nymphs obtain their food from decaying vegetation, green algae and diatoms. They in turn make up a large part of the diet of many insects and fish. Mayflies spend most of their lives in the larval form (anywhere from several months to 2-3 years) living & feeding in an aquatic environment. The adults, however, live on the wing only from a few hours to a few days. Their primary function is to reproduce. The name Mayfly is somewhat misleading since they can be found near bodies of water from April to October, and in warm regions all the year round.
