Caption: A pond skater insect, or water strider (family Gerridae) standing on the surface of pond water. The insect was photographed through an interfero- meter which detects interference patterns in water surface tension made by the pond skater as it walks on the water. Pond skaters move by making rowing motions with their middle legs, laid flat on the water. The hindlegs steer the insect while the forelegs are used for catching prey. The movement is jerky often with jumps to considerable distances, but the surface of the water is never broken. The body of the insect is covered with silver, water repellent hairs.
