Caption: Bed bug. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a profile of the head and mouthparts of Cimex sp. the bed bug. The front pair of legs, the antennae (pointing left and right), and the stylet (the central, descending structure used to suck blood) are all visible. The compound eyes appear brown. The bugs must suck blood at each stage of their development in order to mature. They bite several times in succession, producing a number of swellings which are only usually detected after they have retreated to their day- time resting places (mattresses, skirting boards, rips in furniture etc). Magnification: x35 at 6x7cm size. x120 at 8x10"
