Caption: Bedbug penis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the penis of a male bedbug (family Cimicidae). During mating, the male punctures the wall of the female's abdomen and deposits its sperm into a sac. This process is known as traumatic insemination. The female lays around 200 eggs during each reproductive period, producing up to three batches of eggs a year. The bedbug is a nocturnal parasite that feeds on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals. It inhabits human dwelling places, living in mattresses, upholstery and flooring. Magnification: x110 at 5x7cm size.
