Caption: Assassin bug (family Reduviidae). This insect is an aggressive predator that will attack animals much larger than itself. It feeds by external digestion. Injecting a venomous liquid into its prey, via its long beak (not seen), which quickly kills the prey and dissolves its tissues. The assassin bug then sucks the liquified tissue up through its beak. Assassin bugs prey on other insects and invertebrates, but some will also suck the blood of birds, reptiles and mammals. Some South American species transmit the protozoan that causes Chagas' disease. Photographed in the Amazon rainforest, Ecuador.
