Caption: Termite mound. Mound made by termites on a rainforest tree. The termite mound is seen as a grey mass (at centre) growing on the tree trunk. Termite mounds can grow to lengths of seven metres or more. The mound has a honeycombed internal structure and is composed of soil, wood and termite excrement cemented together with saliva. Termites are social insects living in large colonies. Their social structure is made up of one large queen and several smaller king termites with many workers. Photographed in Ecuador.
