Caption: Walnut aphid. Macrophotograph of a population of aphids clustered along the vein of a walnut leaf. Known as plant lice, aphids are specialised plant feeders that suck the sap from plant veins. Here, they have aligned to feed on the central vein on the underside of a leaf. Aphids multiply rapidly; a variety of aphid sizes and age groups are evident here, the youngest at lower frame. They are serious pests of flowers, vegetables and some fruit trees.
