Caption: Mealybug. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a female mealybug (Planococcus sp.). Its sucking mouthparts are seen at centre. They are atypical insects in that the females possess feeding mouthparts and no wings. They are pests of various fruit crops, including grapes and citrus fruits. Mealybugs feed on plant sap, which weakens the plant, causing it to wilt and often die. Magnification: x55 at 6x7cm size.
