Caption: Aphid. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an aphid (sub-order Homoptera). The horn-like projections (top left & right corner) are antennae and compound eyes (orange, centre left & right) are seen. The mouthparts (lower centre) are used to penetrate a plant and suck sap from the plant's veins. The first of three pairs of walking legs are seen at lower left and bottom right corner. Aphids multiply rapidly and as such are serious pests of flowers, vegetables and some fruit crops. Magnification: x175 at 6x7cm size.
