Caption: Greenfly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an aphid (sub-order Homoptera), or greenfly, feeding on a plant stem (right, green). A compound eye is seen at upper centre (dark brown spots) and immediately above it is an antenna. At lower centre is the aphid's tube-like mouthpart, which is used to pierce the plant stem so that its fine extension (seen running from the mouth to the stem) can suck the sap from the veins inside it. Aphids multiply rapidly and are serious pests of flowers, vegetables and some fruit crops.
