Caption: Eastern pondhawk dragonfly. Macrophotograph of the head of an eastern pondhawk dragonfly (Erythemis simplicicollis). Its large compound eyes (yellow/black) are seen taking up much of its head. This dragonfly has excellent vision and a fast, direct flight. It is a predator, taking smaller insects in flight. It hunts over ponds, lakes and slow-moving rivers in eastern North America. Magnification unknown.
