Caption: The Desert Locust Schistocerca gregaria seen here mating; the male is the smaller, yellow locust on top of the female. Under conditions of overcrowding nymphs of this species undergo a 'phase' change both in colouration and behaviour. They mass together in enormous numbers, becoming highly excited and set off in a purposeful manner devouring all vegetation that they encounter. The nymphs transform into adults, which form the devastating flying swarms of locusts that periodically plague Africa.
