Caption: Head of a cricket. Macrophotograph of the head of the cricket Phaneroptera falcata. The insect is perched on a flower. Its compound eyes (white) are seen near a pair of segmented antennae; at lower centre are mouthparts. The brilliant green colour of this cricket is due to pigment formed by the insect and not as a result of chlorophyll ingested in its diet. The colour resembles the leaves that form the insect's environment, thus giving it an excellent camouflage. Although it resembles a grasshopper, Phaneroptera falcata is a member of the subfamily: Phaneropterinae which include vegetarian tree-dwelling crickets.
