Caption: Roasted grasshoppers on tortilla. Meal of roasted grasshoppers with mashed avocado on a corn tortilla. Grasshoppers belong to the order Orthoptera. They can leap long distances due to their well-developed back legs. In many species the males and females find one another by making a chirping sound by rubbing either their front wings together or their back legs on their front wings. The eating of insects, entomophagy, occurs all over the world, and includes ants, beetles and moths. Insects, along with arachnids such as spiders and scorpions, are good sources of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Photographed in a restaurant in Mexico City, Mexico.
