Caption: Lubber grasshopper (Romalea microptera) standing on a palm leaf. The lubber grasshopper is so called because it is large, stout, clumsy. It is the best known species of grasshopper in Florida, USA. It has small wings and is flightless. The male tends to be smaller than the female, measuring 43-55 millimetres in length, compared to 50-70 millimetres. When disturbed, a lubber grasshopper will hiss and spread its wings. This grasshopper eats a wide variety of plants and is found in nearly all habitats.
