Caption: Short-horned grasshopper (Phymateus saxosus) specimen. When disturbed, the insect will launch into an erratic flight, displaying its two pairs of wings. When it lands, the top, narrow pair of wings cover the lower, broader pair, confusing the predator. The familiar buzzing song of the grasshopper is produced by the rapid motion of its hooked hind legs over its wings. The grasshopper's hind legs are enlarged and modified for leaping. The grasshopper is a herbivore and feeds on a variety of plants. P. saxosus is native to Madagascar.
