Caption: Locusts (Family Pyrgomorphidae). Locusts are a type of grasshopper. They are solitary insects but in some species, when the population rises above a critical level, they congregate and lay millions of eggs. These hatch to form different, more gregarious and brightly coloured, offspring. When these mature they form huge swarms of millions of individuals which destroy all vegetation in their path.
