Caption: Walking leaf insect. Walking leaf insect (Phyllium bioculatum) on a leaf. This leaf-eating insect has large flattened projections resembling leaves on its abdomen and limbs. The imitation of plants by animals is known as phytomimesis. This is a form of camouflage designed to render the insect invisible when it is stationary. Leaf insects are generally nocturnal, remaining still in the day to avoid predators. Photographed in Indonesia.
