Caption: Stick insect moulting. This process, where an insect discards its old exoskeleton, is known as ecdysis. The exoskeleton is rigid, and for the insect to grow, the old one (brown) must be discarded. The new exoskeleton is soft for a few hours after moulting, allowing the insect to grow before it hardens.
