Caption: Greenhouse thrip larvae (Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis), macrophotograph. These larvae hatch onto the leaves of their ornamental host plants and develop through several stages, the third of which (pre-pupal, seen here) has red eyes, a light yellow body and short wing pads. The first two larval stages feed on the leaves of the host plant, beginning with the underside and moving to the upper surface as their population expands. The skin is moulted between stages; the small, white, empty skins can also be seen here. Greenhouse thrips are found throughout South and Central America and in the southern United States. Magnification: x4.5 at 35mm size.
