Caption: Onion thrips. Two adult onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) feeding on an onion leaf. This agricultural pest is found worldwide. It feeds on all members of the onion (Alliaceae) family as well as other crops, including tomatoes, cabbage, cotton and pineapples. Adults are winged and grow up to 2 millimetres in length. They feed on the plant tissue in two stages. Firstly they rasp the leaf surface to release the liquid from the cells. During this process substances that digest the plant tissue are released. Then, once the tissue is digested, it is sucked up by the thrips.
