Caption: A leaf beetle, family Chrysomelidae. There are about 25 000 species in this family, distributed worldwide. Many of them are brightly coloured with short antennae and good jumping ablity. Some are able to exude blood charged with defensive substances which smell or taste unpleasant, or are poisonous or corrosive, to deter predators. Both larvae and adults live on plants. Numerous species are injurious to plants, for example the Colorado beetle which destroys potato crops.
