Caption: Asparagus beetle. Spotted asparagus beetle, Lilioceris merdigera, on an asparagus plant. The beetle has bright markings to make it deliberately conspicuous to predators. Warning (aposematic) colouration like this indicates that the animal so coloured has built-in defences such as poisonous or distasteful flesh, or the capacity to strike back in some way. This defence is only partially successful, as asparagus bugs fall prey to parasitic chalcid insects.
