Caption: Meal of water beetles. Meal of water beetles marinated in ginger and soy sauce with a carrot garnish. Other live water beetles are swimming outside the bowl. Beetles belong to the order Coleoptera. These aquatic beetles have an air cavity under their wing covers which they fill periodically by rising to the surface of the water. They are carnivorous, feeding on other insects. The eating of insects, entomophagy, occurs all over the world, and includes ants, moths and grasshoppers. Insects, along with arachnids such as spiders and scorpions, are good sources of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Photographed in Guangzhou Province in China.
