Caption: Northern corn rootworm. Northern corn rootworm beetle (Diabrotica sp.) on an immature ear of corn, or maize (Zea mays). This beetle is an important agricultural pest of maize plants. It lays its eggs in the soil at the base of a plant. The larvae emerge and eat the roots, doing severe damage to the plant and reducing the yield. Its numbers can be controlled with insecticides.
