Caption: Northern corn rootworm. Northern corn rootworm beetle (Diabrotica longicornis) on a leaf of corn, or maize (Zea mays). This beetle is an important agricultural pest of maize plants. It lays its eggs in the soil at the base of a plant. The larvae emerge and eat the roots, doing severe damage to the plant and reducing the yield. Infes- tations can be controlled with insecticides.
