Caption: Beetle exoskeleton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the external surface of the exoskeleton of a billbug beetle (Family Curculionidae), a type of weevil or snout beetle. Insect exoskeletons are mostly made of a polysaccharide called chitin and a protein called sclerotin that makes the exoskeleton hard. The scale-like structures are modified setae (hairs). Magnification unknown.
