Caption: Tropical beetle (Alurnus ornatus) on a Geonoma palm frond in lowland tropical rainforest. A. ornatus lays its eggs in furled palm leaves. The eggs hatch after a month and the larvae feed on the plam heart before pupating. The adult beetles feed on the younger, unfurled leaves, removing long strips of leaf tissue parallel to the leaf veins. Photograph taken in La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica.
