Caption: Stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) specimen. The male European stag beetle has large antler-like jaws (mandibles, centre top). These jaws change size and shape during the beetle's life, and are used in contests between rival males. It lives in damp forests where it can easily feed on rotting wood. L. cervus is Britain's largest beetle. It is mainly found in the South of England, where three main populations are centred around Ipswich, the New Forest and the London area.
