Caption: Hercules beetle foot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the foot of a hercules beetle (Dynastes hercules). The foot comprises a pair of hooked claws (centre) and an adhesive hairy pad (left). The claws are used to grip onto rough surfaces while the pad is for walking on smooth surfaces. Magnification: x60 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
