Caption: Rove beetle (Atheta coriaria), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a rove beetle. At top right are the beetle's antennae and below them are its mandibles (mouthparts). At centre is a compound eye (brown). This beetle is found in soil where it preys on other insects, including flies, thrips and gnats. Because of this, A. coriaria is used as a biological control agent for plant and crop pests.
