Caption: Foot of a great water beetle. Light micrograph of part of the front foot of a male great water beetle, Dytiscus marginalis. The front legs of the male water beetle are covered with suction cups (round-ended structures) and hairs which enable him to cling to the back of the female during copulation. Dytiscus marginalis is an aquatic predator that uses clawed limbs to capture its prey. Magnification x9 at 35mm size.
