Caption: The track of a leaf miner on a leaf from a rain forest in northern Trinidad. These creatures eat their way through the spongy green tissue creating a tunnel between the upper and the lower epidermis of the leaf. This activity is carried out by the larvae of many species of fly, moth, butterfly and some beetles and members of the Hymenoptera. The tunnels begin narrow and increase in width as the larvae increase in girth. When ready to pupate they chew their way to the outside.
