Caption: Macrophotograph of the compound eyes of a horsefly, Tabanus sp. These insects feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals such as cattle and horses. Some species feed on humans. A salivary canal in the piercing mouthpart injects saliva into the wound. This contains agents which prevents blood clotting, thereby facilitating the smooth flow of blood. Only the females are blood- suckers whereas the males feed on nectar.
