Caption: Drosphila mutant with stump wings. Macrophotograph of a mutant fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, with vestigial wings. The wings have failed to develop normally due to a genetic mutation, and they appear as twisted stumps on either side of the thorax (at centre). Normal Drosophila wings extend well over the abdomen and enable the insect to fly. D. melanogaster has been used for many years in important genetic studies because it is easy to raise in large numbers, reproduces rapidly, and many of its mutations (as here) are easy to spot without high magnification. The adult fruit fly is 2-3 millimetres long. Magnification: x8.75 at 6x7cm size.
