Caption: Drosphila mutant with bar eyes. Macrophotograph of a mutant fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, with bar-shaped eyes. The red compound eyes on the head have failed to develop normally due to a genetic mutation, and they are smaller and appear vertically elongated. Normal Drosophila eyes are rounded and occupy a significant area on each side of the head. D. melanogaster has been used for many years in important genetic studies because it is easy to raise in large numbers, reproduces rapidly, and many of its mutations (as here) are easy to spot without high magnification. The adult fruit fly is 2-3 millimetres long. Magnification: x10,5 at 6x7cm size.
