Caption: Housefly head. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of the head of a common housefly Musca domestica, seen in side view. At right is the head; the thorax of the fly is also seen (at left) with its walking legs. The head is dominated by a pair of large compound eyes (white), each eye composed of about 4000 image-forming facets called ommatidia. Mouthparts are visible beneath the eye; hairs on the head and body act as sensory and tactile (touch) organs. The common housefly frequents unsavoury places, and may pick up and transmit serious diseases to humans. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size.
