Caption: Head of a midge larva. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the head and mouthparts of a midge larva. At upper frame are a pair of short jointed antennae; powerful serrated mouthparts are seen at lower centre. Hairs serve as organs of touch. Midges are small delicate flies that gather in vast swarms near standing water. The larvae typically live in water, feeding on algae or detritus, and occasionally they are predatory. Magnification: x300 at 5x7cm size. x525 at 5x4".
