Caption: Fruit fly head. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the head of a fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Both of it's multifaceted compound eyes are visible (red). Between the eyes are two antennae consisting of small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions (aristas). On the snout (at lower centre) is a proboscis which is designed like a suction tube; palps of the mouthparts occur on either side of it. A number of long hairs on the head are used for touch. Drosophila melanogaster is widely used for genetic experiments because it reproduces rapidly and is easily manipulated in the laboratory. Magnification: x70 at 6x6cm size.
