Caption: Fruit fly mutant. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the top half of a mutant fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. At top centre is the head where both of its multifaceted compound eyes are visible. The body of the fly is brown and the wing of the fly (blue at bottom right) has an ectopic eye. Ectopic eyes are perfectly formed eye facets occurring in abnormal parts of the body. This mutation is produced by aberrant gene expression during larval growth. Drosophila melanogaster is widely used for genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it reproduces rapidly and easily in the laboratory. Magnification: x55 at 6x6cm.
