Caption: Light micrograph of the sheep ked Melophagus ovinus, a wingless insect of the fly order (Diptera) which attaches itself to a sheep's body by means of its mouth & the hooks on the end of its six legs. It sucks the blood of its host, and a heavy infestation may lead to anaemia. Keds can be successfully removed by immersing the infested animal in a sheep dip. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size.
