Caption: Maggot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a surgical maggot (Lucilia sericata). Its head (yellow) is seen at top centre. These maggots are used for cleaning wounds, as they eat dead and dying flesh while leaving the healthy areas. They are far more efficient at wound cleaning than conventional methods. They are antiseptic, and prevent bacteria infecting the wound. The maggots are reared in sterile conditions for this purpose. Researchers are trying to isolate the antibacterial and digestive properties in their saliva. Magnification: x30 at 6x7cm size.
